Red Roses with Purple Statice

Red Roses with Purple Statice  17x17 oc

This was an exercise in textures.  Lots of fun!  I started with a very textured underpainting and then working with palette knife I layered and scraped and scumbled the paint around the canvas.  It was loose and playful..no expectations.  I like it.  It feels like energy to me.
Thanks for looking in! Hope you enjoy it.

Angel Valentine

Angel Valentine
16x42 oc

It's late for Valentine's Day but the red roses and the little angel made me think of symbols of love so the title seemed appropriate.
I've been working more abstractly in my background areas, bringing the eye of the viewer through the painting using detail and sharp edges.  I love working this way and will continue to practice until I get it where I want it.
I hope you enjoy my belated Valentine's gift!
Thank you for watching my painting progress!

A Blaze of Roses

A Blaze of Roses
19x29  oc

Michigan has had a hard, cold winter this year.  I love winter but it has been pretty challenging this year.  I needed something to cheer me up so I went to the store for some flowers!  I saw these wonderful yellow and orange picotee roses and thought of sunshine and warmth!  I hope they help you feel that too!
Wishes to you all for a day filled with sunshine!

I was so pleased to see the wonderful article about flower painting in the March issue of Plein Air Magazine ....and there's my painting, "Bucket of Sun"! What an honor!

Amaryllis Study    16x20 oc

I used a little painting knife technique in this painting.  I wanted to play a little with the technique as I know several artists whose work I admire that use painting knives throughout their process. I often paint in a way that simulates that technique, using brushwork to accomplish my goals, but I thought it was time to see how the knife would differ.  It felt a little awkward not being used to it, but I'm sure I will continue to practice at it.
